Both are independent shops in a small town, and neither is better in the abstract. What you need done is what decides it.

One straightforward point in their favour: Valley Cars offers towing and we do not. We do not operate a tow truck. If your vehicle will not move under its own power, a shop that can also come and get it is a genuinely simpler phone call, and we would rather tell you that than leave you to find out. Valley Cars Service Center is separately and independently owned. There is no partnership, ownership, or referral arrangement between their business and ours, and for anything about their shop you should contact them directly.

Vehicles rarely fail in one category at a time. A vibration turns out to be a worn control arm, which throws the alignment out, which has already cost you a set of tires. Keeping all of that under one roof means it gets solved once.

Our alignment rack is in our building

Wheel alignment is quoted up front on our own rack, with camber, caster, and toe set to factory specification, before and after measurements, and a tire condition assessment. Alignment is part of our suspension department rather than an add-on, which matters because every new suspension component changes the geometry and the alignment belongs on the same visit.

Our diagnostic equipment stays set up

Computer scanning, fault code analysis, engine performance testing, and electrical troubleshooting are permanent fixtures here. Engine diagnostics include a road test where the fault only shows up under load.

Lift work and a real undercarriage inspection

Transmissions, clutches, differentials, transfer cases, and corroded brake lines all need the vehicle in the air with sustained access. So does an honest look underneath. On anything that has spent winters on salted Teton County roads, undercarriage corrosion and brake line pitting are the findings that actually matter, and you need the car raised and lit to assess either.

Alignment is the service people most often think of as a quick add-on, and it is the one where the difference between shops is most measurable. Here is what is actually happening on the rack.

The three angles

Toe is whether the wheels point slightly inward or outward relative to each other, viewed from above. It is the angle that scrubs tires fastest when it is wrong, and a few millimetres of toe error will feather a set of tires in a season. Camber is the inward or outward tilt of the wheel viewed from the front, and it decides which part of the tread carries the load in a corner. Caster is the forward or rearward tilt of the steering axis, and it is what makes a steering wheel self-centre and track straight at speed. Each one is set against the manufacturer's specification for your specific vehicle, not a generic target.

What we check before touching an adjustment

An alignment performed on worn components is money thrown away. Loose tie rod ends, worn ball joints, tired bushings, or a failing wheel bearing will all move under load and put the geometry straight back out. So the inspection comes first, and if something needs replacing we tell you before we align rather than after. That is also why alignment and suspension work belong on the same visit.

Why this valley is hard on alignment

Frost heave, washboard dirt roads, potholed spring pavement, and the occasional hard hit into a snow berm all knock geometry out. So does a lift kit, a new bumper, or any suspension modification, which is why our custom build work and our alignment rack living in the same building saves a lot of back and forth.

Before and after numbers

You get the measurements from before we adjusted anything and the measurements after, plus a tire condition assessment. Numbers on paper are the only way to know an alignment was actually performed and where it actually ended up.

What you should get in writing, and what the FTC says about it

The Federal Trade Commission's consumer guide Auto Repair Basics sets out what you are entitled to expect from any shop, including this one.

• What a written estimate must contain. The FTC says a written estimate "should identify the condition to be repaired, the parts needed, and the anticipated labor charge," and that you should make sure you get a signed copy.
• Approval before the work exceeds the estimate. The FTC says the estimate "should state that the shop will contact you for approval before they do any work exceeding a specified amount of time or money," and notes that state law may require this. Alignment is a common place for it, since a seized adjuster or a worn tie rod discovered on the rack changes the job. We call.
• Warranties are not standard. The FTC states plainly that there is no standard warranty on repairs, that you should make sure you understand what is covered, and that you should get it in writing. Our repairs carry a warranty on parts and labor and we go over the terms before starting.
• What you get at the end. The FTC says you should receive a completed repair order listing each repair, the parts supplied, the cost of each part, labor charges, and the odometer reading both when you brought the vehicle in and when the repair order was completed.

The FTC also recommends asking whether the technician or shop has experience with your make and model. That is a fair question here, where the local fleet skews heavily toward trucks and AWD wagons, and it is one we are happy to answer.
