Rather than describe another business for them, we are going to do the thing we can actually do well, which is set out our own shop in full: every service, what it starts at, and what you get in writing. That is more use to you than a summary of somebody else's marketing.

Engine diagnostics and check engine lights

A diagnostic scan from $95 covers OBD-II code reading, fault code analysis, a recommended repair plan, and a written estimate. Comprehensive diagnostics from $195 add full computer scanning, a road test, visual inspection, electrical system testing, and a detailed written report. A code tells you where to start looking, not what is wrong, and the difference between those two things is most of the job. See our engine diagnostics page.

Brake repair

Brakes, from pads and rotors through calipers, hydraulics, and corroded lines. Mountain driving puts sustained heat through a braking system and salted winter roads work on the lines from the outside. A brake inspection is part of the multi-point check on every maintenance visit, so wear gets caught before it becomes a repair.

Oil changes and scheduled maintenance

Oil and filter change from $95, conventional or synthetic, with a fluid level check and multi-point inspection, usually 30 to 45 minutes. Full maintenance service from $195 adds tire rotation, brake inspection, battery test, air filter check, and all fluids checked and topped. Major service from $495 covers high-mileage vehicles and seasonal prep with transmission fluid service, coolant flush, power steering service, spark plug inspection, belt and hose inspection, and a written condition report. Tires and wheel alignment

Seasonal tire changeover is $160: current set off, other set on, pressures adjusted, lug nuts torqued, and free rotation with a new set. We also run our own alignment rack, with wheel alignment from $195, camber, caster, and toe set to factory specification, before and after measurements, and a tire condition assessment. Alignment is a core part of our suspension work rather than an add-on, which matters because new suspension components change your alignment and the two jobs belong together.

Transmission and drivetrain

Transmission fluid service from $195 including filter replacement where applicable and road test verification, clutch replacement, and full repair or rebuild work on automatics and manuals with a warranty on the repair. Drivetrain service from $295 covers differential and transfer case fluid, CV joint inspection and repair, U-joints, and driveshafts. Suspension and steering

Suspension inspection from $75 with a written report covering shocks and struts, ball joints, tie rods, and bushings. Shock and strut replacement from $395 with a warranty on parts and labor and road test verification, plus control arms and steering components. Washboard dirt roads, frost heave, and a hard spring are tough on suspension, and the first symptom is usually uneven tire wear.

Custom builds and aftermarket

Custom builds are one of our five core service areas. Front and rear bumpers with sensor recalibration and paint matching where needed, LED headlight conversions, tail light upgrades, lighting packages, suspension modifications, wheels and tires, interior accessories, and complete builds planned out with you first. Because the same shop does your servicing and your build, the alignment after a lift or a new bumper happens in the same place, on the same visit.

Pre-purchase inspections

Our pre-purchase inspection covers engine, transmission, brakes, suspension, electrical systems, undercarriage, and overall condition, with a detailed written report. It is fully independent, since we have no interest in whether you buy the vehicle. On anything that has spent winters here we look closely at undercarriage corrosion and brake line pitting.

Batteries and electrical

Battery testing, battery replacement, charging system checks, and electrical system diagnostics. A cold-morning no-start can be the battery, the starter, or the charging system, and testing tells you which before you spend anything.

These follow the Federal Trade Commission's consumer guidance in "Auto Repair Basics." Ask us all of them.

1. How do you price your work? The FTC notes that some shops charge a flat rate for labor based on an independent or manufacturer estimate of the time a repair takes, while others charge for the technician's actual time.
2. Can I get a written estimate? Per the FTC, it should identify the condition to be repaired, the parts needed, and the anticipated labor charge, and you should get a signed copy. Ours are free.
3. Will you contact me before exceeding it? The FTC says the estimate should state that the shop will get your approval before doing work beyond a specified amount of time or money, and that state law may require this. We call.
4. Is there a diagnostic charge, and does it apply to the repair? Ask specifically whether it still applies if you take the repair elsewhere.
5. What is the warranty, in writing? The FTC states there is no standard warranty on repairs and that you should get the terms in writing. Ours covers parts and labor, and we explain the terms before starting.
6. New, remanufactured, or salvage parts? Those are the FTC's three categories. Ask which is going on your vehicle and why. We use OEM and quality aftermarket parts.
7. Have you worked on my make and model? The FTC recommends asking. It matters here, where trucks and AWD wagons dominate the local fleet.
8. What do I get when it is done? A completed repair order listing each repair, the parts supplied, the cost of each part, labor charges, and odometer readings in and out. The FTC also notes you can ask for the replaced parts back.

A shop that cannot answer those plainly is telling you something.

The Garage is an independently owned shop working a small market. Jackson has more vehicles needing work than it has bays to work on them, particularly in the weeks either side of winter, so booking ahead is worth doing.
