Most vehicles do not fail in tidy categories. A vibration turns out to be a worn control arm, which changes your alignment, which was already eating a set of tires. When one shop owns all of that, the problem gets solved once.

Our alignment rack is in our building

We run our own alignment rack, and wheel alignment is quoted up front, with camber, caster, and toe set to factory specification and before and after measurements you can see. This matters more than it sounds. Replacing shocks, struts, tie rods, ball joints, or control arms changes a vehicle's alignment geometry, so the alignment belongs on the same visit as the suspension work. When the rack lives somewhere else, it becomes a second appointment on somebody else's calendar.

Our diagnostic equipment stays set up

Computer scanning, fault code analysis, engine performance testing, and electrical system troubleshooting are core services here, not a favour we squeeze in. Our engine diagnostics work includes a road test where the fault only shows up under load, which is the only way to catch a lot of intermittent faults.

A check engine light is a symptom, not a diagnosis, and a fault code is a place to start looking, not an answer. The distance between those two things is most of the job. Here is what the work actually involves.

The scan is the beginning, not the end

An OBD-II scan reads stored trouble codes from the engine control unit. A code such as a lean condition on bank one narrows the field to a real list of causes: a vacuum leak, a failing mass airflow sensor, a weak fuel pump, a clogged injector, or an exhaust leak upstream of the oxygen sensor. Reading the code takes two minutes. Working out which of those it is, is the diagnosis. Our diagnostic scan is quoted up front and includes code reading, fault code analysis, a recommended repair plan, and a written estimate.

Live data and the road test

Comprehensive diagnostics add full computer scanning, a road test, a visual inspection, and electrical system testing. The road test is not padding. A fault that only appears under load, at altitude, or on a long climb will not reproduce itself in a service bay at idle, and Jackson has no shortage of long climbs. Watching live sensor data while the fault is actually happening is often the only way to see it.

Altitude changes what normal looks like

At roughly 6,200 feet, a naturally aspirated engine takes in less air per stroke, and the fuel trim numbers a technician reads on a scan tool sit differently than they would at sea level. Knowing what is normal here keeps you from chasing a symptom that is not a fault.

What you should get in writing, and what the FTC says about it

The Federal Trade Commission's consumer guide Auto Repair Basics is specific about this, and it is worth knowing your side of it before you hand over keys anywhere.

• What a written estimate must contain. The FTC says a written estimate "should identify the condition to be repaired, the parts needed, and the anticipated labor charge," and that you should make sure you get a signed copy.
• Approval before the work exceeds the estimate. The FTC says the estimate "should state that the shop will contact you for approval before they do any work exceeding a specified amount of time or money," and notes that state law may require this. We call.
• Ask about the diagnostic charge. The FTC advises finding out whether there will be a diagnostic charge if you decide to have the work performed elsewhere, since many shops charge for diagnostic time. It is a fair question to ask us or anyone.
• How the shop prices labor. The FTC notes that some shops charge a flat rate based on an independent or manufacturer's estimate of the time a repair should take, while others charge for the actual time the technician worked. Both are normal practice. Knowing which one you are dealing with is what lets you read the bill.
