Our alignment rack is in our building

Alignment needs a fixed, calibrated rack. There is no portable substitute. Wheel alignment is quoted up front, with camber, caster, and toe set to factory specification and before and after measurements you can see. Because the rack is ours, suspension work and the alignment that must follow it happen on the same visit, in the same place. New shocks, struts, tie rods, ball joints, or control arms all change a vehicle's alignment geometry, so those two jobs genuinely belong together.

Our diagnostic equipment stays set up

Full computer scanning, fault code analysis, engine performance testing, and electrical system troubleshooting live here permanently. Our engine diagnostics include a road test when the fault only appears under load, which in this valley usually means on a climb.

One continuous service history, in one place

Lift work and a real undercarriage inspection

Transmission and clutch jobs, differential and transfer case service, and corroded brake line replacement all need sustained overhead access, sometimes across more than one day. So does a proper undercarriage inspection, which on any vehicle that has wintered on salted Teton County roads is where the important findings are: rust on suspension hardware, pitting on hard brake lines, corroded exhaust hangers. You need the vehicle raised and good light to see any of it honestly.

Brakes are the clearest example of why the building matters, and Jackson is hard on them in two separate ways. Long descents put sustained heat through a braking system that flat driving never generates, and years of salted winter roads work on the steel lines from the outside in. Here is what a proper brake job actually involves.

Pads and rotors are the easy part

Measuring pad material against the manufacturer's minimum thickness, measuring rotor thickness and checking runout with a dial indicator, then deciding honestly whether a rotor can be resurfaced or has to be replaced. A warped or thin rotor is what you feel as a pulsing pedal, and repeated hard braking on a mountain grade is one of the surest ways to produce one.

Calipers, slides, and hardware

A seized caliper slide pin drags one pad permanently against the rotor. That shows up as uneven pad wear, a pull under braking, and heat. Cleaning and lubricating the slides and replacing worn hardware is the difference between a brake job that lasts and one that comes back.

Hydraulics and lines, which is where the lift earns its money

Steel brake lines corrode from the outside in on salted roads. Replacing a corroded hard line means routing new line along the underside of the vehicle, flaring and fitting it correctly, and bleeding the system properly afterwards. That is not a driveway job. It needs the vehicle in the air, sustained access, and time.

Brake fluid

Brake fluid is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture from the air over time. Water in the fluid lowers its boiling point, and fluid that boils on a long descent gives you a soft pedal exactly when you need a firm one. This is a maintenance item, not a repair, and it is one of the ones people skip.

What you should get in writing, and what the FTC says about it

The Federal Trade Commission's consumer guide Auto Repair Basics lays out what to expect from any shop, and brake work is a good place to hold anyone to it.

• What a written estimate must contain. The FTC says a written estimate "should identify the condition to be repaired, the parts needed, and the anticipated labor charge," and that you should make sure you get a signed copy.
• Approval before the work exceeds the estimate. The FTC says the estimate "should state that the shop will contact you for approval before they do any work exceeding a specified amount of time or money," and notes that state law may require this. Brake jobs are a common place for this to come up, because a caliper that turns out to be seized changes the job. We call.
• Which parts are going on. The FTC classifies replacement parts as new, remanufactured or rebuilt or reconditioned, and salvage. Ask which category you are getting and why. We use OEM and quality aftermarket parts, and we will tell you which.
• What you get at the end. The FTC says you should receive a completed repair order listing each repair, the parts supplied, the cost of each part, labor charges, and the odometer reading both when you brought the vehicle in and when the repair order was completed. You can also ask for the replaced parts back.
